mini-review: Northside Social (Arlington)

My friend Dillon, who has been one of my coffee gurus, tipped me off to this place. I was hooked after my first visit, and it’s still my favorite cafe in the DC area.

Located in a cool old building in the Clarendon section of Arlington, VA, Northside Social Coffee and Wine is part of a local restaurant group that includes a second Northside outlet recently opened in Falls Church.

Coffee is superb, using Counter Culture beans. Staff aren’t allowed as baristas until they’re properly trained, and it shows in the consistent high quality of their beverages.

The food doesn’t get short shrift. Lots of delicious options on the menu, and an awesome array of baked goods made in house. I’ve never had a meh meal here.

The key to the place is the staff. All friendly, all skilled, and watching them handle a long line is a monument to teamwork. Staffers easily bounce from register to espresso machine to the floor in a synchronized ballet and all work together extremely well.

Lots of outdoor seating for when the weather cooperates, including an outdoor bar. Upstairs space used as a wine bar and for weekend brunch. Interesting selection of single beers by the bottle.

It’s easy to fall in love with Northside Social, where you’ll feel at home right away. Give it a try.
