Phoenix part 3

third in a series of four posts

Yes, there’s more…….

BERDENA

  • in a nice block of old town Scottsdale
  • airy, bright, beautiful tiles, and a sweet baby blue Slayer espresso machine
  • don’t make the same mistake I made by stopping on Sunday morning, the family breakfast/brunch crowd will guarantee a long wait

MOXIE

  • modern, stylish set up in a space used as a retail café and roasting
  • high end machines, including automated pour over makers
  • high ceilings, big windows, white surfaces makes for a bright, large, welcoming space that on both visits was very busy

another shop with gorgeous tilework

WEBE COFFEE ROASTERS

  • located in the far northern stretches of the city, inside the 101 Loop
  • combines some of the best elements from many of the other cafés: in a generic shopping strip; bright, open space with a concrete floor and high ceilings, punctuated by a design incorporating light wood and bright colors; space includes roasting as well as retail café
  • open a little over a year, WeBe is trying to balance sourcing and preparing excellent coffee with being accessible and fun for the casual coffee drinker as well as coffee obsessives

TOURISTY INTERLUDE

Had some really good food during my visit, here are a few highlights.

You expect to find good Mexican food in Phoenix, and I enjoyed visiting long-standing stalwart Tee Pee Mexican Food in the Arcadia neighborhood. When I was visiting WeBe for coffee, I went to El Super Taco nearby and the food was fantastic.

For the name alone, I had to visit Matt’s Big Breakfast. The blueberry pancakes were excellent, service was friendly and attentive. Only disappointment was they didn’t have any logo tees available.

welcome to my breakfast place!

For years I’ve seen Pizzeria Bianco in lists of the country’s best pizzas, and for good reason. One night we tried the Town & Country location, but the wait (no reservations) was quoted as 2 hours. The next we went early to the original downtown location in Heritage Square, and the hour-plus wait was worth it, particularly with the Bianco Bar next door. The pizza was truly special.

Next, we’ll wrap things up in installment number 4.

  1. I’m loving the Arizona report. It’s good to know that “generic strip mall” can be the source of good coffee.
